A sacred ritual to open the pathways of breath and awareness
As Fall deepens and both the wind outside and the heat inside draw moisture from our bodies, the ancient ritual of Nasya offers a simple yet powerful way to protect the delicate tissues of the nose and fortify your natural defenses against seasonal viruses.
Nasya ~ the Ayurvedic practice of administering herbal oils or medicated substances through the nasal passages ~ is a deeply therapeutic ritual that nourishes the senses, clears the mind, and balances the doshas, especially vata and kapha dosha in the head and neck region.
In yogic traditions, the nose is considered a sacred pathway to the brain and higher consciousness, a concept supported by ancient texts and modern scientific research. Through the nose, prana (life force) enters by way of the breath. The nose is a door to higher consciousness and is a pathway to our inner pharmacy.

The Key Benefits of Nasya
The benefits of this simple nasya practice are many, touching every part of our being. This nourishing ritual supports not only physical health but also emotional and mental well-being.
Physical Benefits
Nasya lubricates the mucous membranes of the nasal passages, improves breathing, and helps prevent sinus congestion by moistening, clearing, and opening the nasal passages, which then enhances the flow of oxygen.
This moistening, protective, and clearing quality also helps relieve headaches and migraines and enhances the clarity of our senses, particularly vision, smell, and hearing.
The soothing, unctuous nature of the oil supports vocal tone and nourishes the scalp, stimulating healthy hair growth and helping to prevent premature graying and hair fall when practiced regularly.
Nasya also helps relieve pain in the head, neck, and shoulders by eliminating toxins, improving circulation, relieving tension, and nourishing tissues through the nasal passages. This additionally enhances complexion and glow, and improves facial tension and skin health, thereby reducing the signs of aging.
Mental & Emotional Benefits
The practice of nasya, thanks in large part to the potent medicine of oil, helps to ground and calm the nervous system by nourishing the Prana Vaha Srotas, the channel that carries our vital life force. In turn, this practice can ease stress and anxiety and support more restful, restorative sleep.
Nasya enhances mental clarity by promoting alertness, focus, and memory. Its clearing quality also supports emotional balance by releasing stagnation and heaviness in the head, often linked to overthinking and the accumulation of unprocessed emotions.
Energetic & Spiritual Benefits
Let’s not forget the subtle effects of nasya on our energetic being. This practice balances prana and nourishes the upward flow of energy that supports higher consciousness, particularly through the third eye center (ajna chakra), awakening intuition, inner vision, and mental clarity.
Nasya can bring a sense of lightness to the body and mind, and many experience a feeling of upliftment and spaciousness after nasya.

How to Perform Nasya at Home
(Pratimarsha Nasya – Daily Gentle Version)
Nasya can be done every day and is best performed each morning and/or evening on an empty stomach. Great to do after brushing your teeth and tongue scraping.
For daily use, many mild nasya oils can be used up to twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, especially for dry sinuses.
Morning time is most effective for clearing out any excess mucus that has accumulated overnight. Perform nasya at least 30 to 60 minutes before you shower or exercise to allow the oil to be properly absorbed. Applying nasya in the evening can be beneficial for promoting relaxation and sound sleep, especially for those with dryness.
Quick Version
Here is a very simple and quick version of this practice anyone can do, especially if your nasal passages feel dry but you don’t have time for the full ritual.
How to do: dip the pinky finger into a small amount of ghee or oil and insert it into the nostrils. Carefully rub the nasal passages, making sure not to injure the delicate mucus membranes. I recommend you make sure your fingernail is short and has no rough edges.

For a more complete ritual, follow these steps below.
Step-by-Step Ritual
Warm the oil
Place the oil bottle in a cup of hot water for a few minutes until it’s pleasantly warm (never hot).
Vata: Use warm ghee or sesame oil ~ it soothes dryness and anxiety.
Pitta: Use cooling oils like brahmi or coconut-based nasya oil.
Kapha: Use stimulating oils like eucalyptus or tridoshic blends to clear heaviness.
Prepare your body
Sit quietly for a moment and take a few deep breaths.
Optionally, do a brief self-massage of the face and neck with a few drops of oil to stimulate circulation.
Lie down comfortably
Recline with your head slightly tilted back so your nostrils are open toward the ceiling.
Administer the oil
Place 2–3 drops of warm oil into each nostril.
Inhale gently, sniffing the oil upward into the sinuses (don’t snort forcefully).
Relax for a minute
Stay lying down and breathe slowly.
You may feel the oil moving into your sinuses or throat.
Expel gently
Sit up, spit out any excess oil or mucus that may come into the throat, and gently blow your nose.
Finish mindfully
Sit quietly for a few minutes, noticing how your breath feels ~ often more open, calm, and clear.
After nasya, if time allows, you can sit for a few minutes and practice alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) to help distribute prana evenly through the body and deepen the effect.

When to Avoid Nasya
Do not practice nasya if you:
Have a cold, sinus infection, flu, or fever.
Are menstruating or pregnant.
Have just eaten or are very hungry.
Have recently undergone head, neck, or eye procedures.
Feel extremely fatigued or emotionally unstable that day.
Right after intense exercise.
Nasya is a powerful and effective way to keep the upper respiratory system and your immune defenses strong and balanced. It’s also a beautiful practice to enhance clarity and alertness in the morning. If you have any questions or would like to share your own nasya experiences or testimonials, I’d love to hear from you!
As always, this practice is most effective when tailored to your unique constitution and current state of balance.
