The Cooling Wisdom of Neem & Brahmi
One of the beautiful teachings of Ayurveda is that nature is always speaking to us.
Each season arrives with its own energy, its own lessons, and its own medicine. When we pay attention, the plants growing around us - and the herbs that have been cherished for centuries - offer guidance on how to return to balance.
Summer carries the qualities of heat, intensity, expansion, and transformation.
While this fiery energy can inspire creativity, joy, and vitality, too much heat can leave us feeling depleted, irritated, inflamed, or overstimulated.
This is where our plant teachers step in.

Neem teaches us the wisdom of cooling and purification.
Known in Ayurveda as one of the most cooling herbs, Neem helps pacify excess heat and supports the body's natural ability to maintain balance. Its bitter qualities remind us that sometimes healing comes from creating space - clearing what no longer serves us and soothing areas of excess.
Neem is a beautiful reminder that we do not always need more stimulation. Sometimes the medicine is found in cooling, calming, and returning to simplicity.

Brahmi teaches us the wisdom of stillness and clarity.
Brahmi is a beloved Ayurvedic herb traditionally used to nourish the mind and nervous system. Its cooling qualities help soothe excess mental activity, encouraging calm awareness and inner quiet.
During the long, expansive days of summer, Brahmi reminds us that even in a season full of movement and activity, we still need moments of pause, reflection, and deep restoration.
Where Plant Wisdom meets Healing Touch
These two plant teachers are herbs I lovingly incorporate into my Ayurvedic massage practice during the summer months.
Through warm herbal oils and intentional touch, Neem and Brahmi become part of a seasonal ritual designed to support the whole being. The oils nourish the skin and tissues while the herbs offer their cooling and calming qualities - helping clients release tension, settle the nervous system, and reconnect with a deeper sense of balance.
Ayurveda teaches us that healing is not separate from nature - it is a return to relationship with nature. Every season asks something different of us, and one of the beautiful teachings of Ayurveda is learning to work with nature instead of against it. The plants around us have wisdom to share. They remind us when to soften, when to release, when to slow down, and when to restore.
This summer, may we listen closely to the teachers growing all around us.
