Music is Medicine

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Everything we experience in the universe is simply waves of vibrations. Everything around us is pulsating and vibrating. These vibrations affect us on a deep, whole-being level, including the heart, the brain, and the soul.

In the Vedic texts, sound is one of the most important principles of existence, being understood to be the origin of the material universe. Sound creates. The words we use, the sounds we utter, the melodies we listen to - all have the power of creation and transformation behind them.

In simple terms, a sound wave is a vibration in the air which causes your eardrum to vibrate. When vibration / sound waves reach our ears, they are converted into electrical signals that travel up to the brain. There they trigger responses in our bodies like flooding our brain with dopamine - a neurotransmitter that helps us feel pleasure. These sound waves also release oxytocin - most commonly found in mothers during labor - which is a natural pain killer and allows us to bond with others.

Listening to music can alter our emotions, release hormones, and trigger certain impulses. It can make us more productive and creative, and it can relieve stress and improve our moods. So if you're needing an adjustment, remember sometimes all you need is a little music!
